Steve Rommereim
Alcester, SD

Steve and his wife Charlotte have two daughters; Lara and Leah. Steve operates a diversified farm near Alcester, SD which includes corn, soybeans, alfalfa; a 5000 head wean to finish swine operation and a cow/calf enterprise. Elected to Executive board in 2001, he is currently serving as the SDPPC President, Chairman of the Executive Committee, Association Services Committee, Budget & Finance Committee, DE Committee, Personnel Committee, chairs the Swine Health Advisory Committee, NPB Environment Committee member and a board member for Ag United of South Dakota. Locally, Steve is involved with 4-H leadership, U-C-Y County Pork Producers, Alcester school board and on the board of the Big Springs Baptist Church.

Paul Brandt
Clear Lake, SD

 

Paul and his wife Lisa, have four children at home; Caitlyn, Jacob, Tanner, and Dylan. Paul, and his twin brother Joel, are shareholders in a farrow to finish and milling operation they finish hogs from that business. They also have a cow/calf operation, a feeder cattle operation, a diversified crop operation, and a seed sales business. Paul is a SDSU graduate with a degree in agronomy. He was a member of the Deuel County FSA Committee for 11 years and currently serves on the Deuel County Zoning Board. Paul serves as the 1st Vice-President of the South Dakota Pork Producers Council. Paul sits on the Executive Committee, Production and Profitability Committee, Budget & Finance Committee and the Public Policy Committee. He is also involved in Operation Main Street, was 2006 Master Pork Producer, and has been a Pork Act delegate and a NPPC delegate to the National Pork Forum for the past several years.

Darin Larson
Beresford, SD

Darin and his wife Nancy, have four children; Alyssa, Gabrielle, Jonah and Caleb. Darin has been active in hog production since 1990, currently farrowing 700 sows. With the help of a custom nursery and finishing barns, he finishes out about 80% of the hogs and sells the remainder as Isoweans. Along with his two brothers, Darin also has a dairy operation and row crops. Darin was elected to the Executive Board in 2004. He serves on the Association Services and Membership Committee, Demand Enhancement Committee and Executive Committee. Darin was the 2006 SD Pork-All-American. In 2009 Darin was elected as the 2nd Vice-President of the Executive Board.  Darin also stays very busy in the summer cooking pork for various social events.  He is also currently serving as deacon of his church’s board.

Jerauld County
Andrew Arhart
Alpena, SD 

Andrew and his wife Melissa, work with his father and brother managing a 3,600 head hog finishing facility, 800 head feedlot, 200 head of cows and 1,000 acres of crop production.  Andrew graduated from Dakota Wesleyan University in 1995. He was a financial consultant and grain merchandiser until 2004, when he started working full time with the family farm.  Andrew attends the First Presbyterian church in Huron where he teaches Sunday school.  He serves on the Jerauld/Sanborn County Pork Producers Board, serves on the Jerauld FSA Board, serves on the Board of Directors at American Bank and Trust in Wessington Springs, SD, was a SD Master Pork Producer in 1999 and is involved in the Jerauld County Farm Bureau. Andrew serves on the SDPPC Executive Board, Production & Profitability Committee, Public Policy Committee and is Chairman of the Budget & Finance Committee.

Lester Moeller
St. Lawrence

Lester and his wife Rosemary have three children; Rachael, Benjamin and Alain. Lester contracts a hog operation with Murphy Brown and Millerdale Colony. Lester was reinstated into the Executive Board in 2009 to fill an open position in the 1st district. Formerly on the Executive Board for the SDPPC for eight years, Lester has served on numerous committees including Chairman of the Budget Committee, Association Services Committee, Personnel Committee and he joined the Public Policy Committee in the early 80’s. Lester is now a member of the Demand Enhancement Committee, Chairman of the Public Policy Committee, & Vice-Chairman of the Budget and Finance Committee.

Clarence Wurtz, Upland Colony
Artesian 

Clarence and his wife Syglinda, have eight children; Clarence Jr., Fiona, Linda, Curtis, Ryan, Elizabeth, Aaron and Leah. Clarence and his family are active members of the Upland Hutterian Brethern, where Clarence is currently the Business Manager. Upland Colony had two hog units; 650 sow farrow to finish and a finishing unit. Upland Colony markets approximately 24,000 hogs a year. Clarence is a board member of Prairieland Pork.  He joined the SDPPC Executive Board of Directors in 2004. Clarence serves on the Production Profitability Committee, Public Policy Committee and Demand Enhancement Committee.

Brian Schnoor
Parkston 

Brian and his wife, Lynette, have three children; Ashley, Amber and Aaron.  Brian is the general manager of Starburst Farms Cooperative in Tripp, SD. This breed to wean operation has more than 3000 sows. Brian and his family moved to South Dakota in 1998 to advance their knowledge and experience in the pork industry. Brian is the Past President of the Parkston AAU Youth Wrestling Club. He is the treasurer of the SD Livestock Foundation Board and serves on the SDPPC Association Services/Membership Committee.

Shannon Klumb
Ethan 

Shannon and his wife, Michelle, have three children; Kendra, Kaden and Kody. Shannon attended SDSU with an emphasis in Business. He runs an Isowean to finish operation which markets more than 6000 hogs a year and also runs a cow/calf operation. He has served as President of the Davison County Pork Producers and is still actively involved with the organization with their annual golf tournament and their biggest event, DakotaFest. At SDPPC Shannon serves on the Association Services & Membership Committee, Chairman of the Nominating & Leadership Development Committee, Production Profitability Committee and he and Michelle both donate their time to the Annual Meeting and Trade Show Committee.  Shannon was selected for the 2004 Pork Leadership Academy (PLA).

Ryan Storm
Ethan 

Ryan and his wife Amy have three sons; Jake, Kory and Luke.  Ryan attended SDSU and received his degree in Ag Systems Technology. He now farms 800 acres and has around 100 head cow/calf operation. In 2000 he started his Isowean to finish operation which markets more than 4000 hogs per year. He is currently the President of the Davison County Pork Producers.  He and Amy are very active in running the pork booth at Dakota Fest and coordinating activities that promote pork within his county.  Ryan was on the SDPPC Association Services Committee and is currently on the Executive Committee, Demand Enhancement Committee, Nominating and Leadership Committee, and along with Amy chair the Annual Meeting and Trade Show Committee. He has been involved in many promotions both locally in South Dakota and nationally. Ryan has received the Pork All American Award and along with his father Chuck, was named a Master Pork Producer in 2001. Ryan also had the honor of being selected in 2005 for the Pork Leadership Academy (PLA).  Ryan also has been chosen to be a delegate for the National Pork Forum for the last two years.

Justin Odegaard
Lake Preston, SD 

Justin currently runs the family farm in Lake Preston, SD. He and his family have been active in hog production for many years and he is currently running an operation of mainly farrow to finish with 300 sows along with crops and cattle. Justin attended South Dakota State University where he obtained a major in Animal Science, minor in Ag Business and a minor in Ag Marketing. He is actively involved in the Kingsbury County Pork Producers board and is a member of JC’s, a national organization that works with youth in the local community. Justin was named the 2008 Pork All American. Justin currently serves on the SDPPC Associated Services Committee, Demand Enhancement Committee, and Production & Profitability Committee.

Laron Krause
Clear Lake

Laron and his wife Jolene, have three children: Tiffany, Adam and Brent. They reside in Clear Lake where they run a finishing operation with his parents a diversified row crop operation. Laron is involved in many community and church activities. Laron serves on the Associative Services Committee and Public Policy Committee. Laron also participates in Pork Leadership Academy and Operation Main Street.

Oscar Wenholm, Jr.
Raymond 

Oscar and his wife  Joyce Wenholm live on the 640 acre farm north of Raymond where Oscar grew up.  The farm produces alfalfa and hay for a cash crop.  Oscar and Joyce also operate a custom hay windrowing operation that runs from March through October.  They have completed a ten year finishing contract for Murphy-Brown and have been independent for the last year.  Oscar has been actively defending modern livestock agriculture through the writing of numerous letters to the editor of area publications.  Oscar and Joyce help serve pork at the SDPPC booth at the state fair, and Oscar has also served on the SDPPC Public Policy and Nominating Committees.

Turner County
Dean Schrag
Parker
Dean and his wife Lori have two sons, Toby and Cody. Dean is a graduate of Freeman Academy and lives near Parker on the homestead that has been in his family for over 100 years. Dean has been in the pork business since 1972, and now has a 50 sow farrow to finish operation. Currently, Dean serves as the Treasurer of the Turner County Pork Producers. Dean has served on various church, school, and community committees. Within the South Dakota Pork Producers Council, Dean was elected to the Executive Board in 2004 and serves as the Chairman of the Demand Enhancement Committee.

Doug Wevik
Beresford

Doug and his wife, Chris, have four grown children. Doug serves on the SDPPC Executive Board.  Doug’s farm includes corn and soybeans, he finishes pigs and raises a few beef cattle.  Doug graduated from Beresford High School and obtained his BS in Ag Education from SDSU.  When not farming, Doug enjoys camping, boating and most sports. He also likes flying and has his private pilot’s license.  He is a member of the Beresford School Board and was recently awarded Farmer of the Year.  Doug was also a member of South Dakota Ag and Rural Leadership Class V.

Jim Petrik
Gayville

Jim and his wife have four children between the ages of 5-16.  Jim operates BPM Seedstock, a gilt production company that includes Dennis Michael, Daryl Henriksen, and Delmar Nelson. Jim also raised corn, soybeans, alfalfa, and has a cow herd. He is a graduate of SDSU. Jim is currently on the Gayville School Board and the Meckling Township Board. Jim’s past experiences include county zoning, Pork America, North Central Pork and some other boards and task forces. Jim currently serves on the SDPPC Executive Board, Demand Enhancement, and Public Policy Committee. Jim is also a member of the South Dakota Swine Breeders Association.  Jim is a graduate of the South Dakota Ag and Rural Leadership Class I.

Mike Lens
Brandon, SD

Mike and his wife, Jeanne have two grown children; Tim and Amanda. Mike is a swine sales consultant for Land O’ Lakes/Purina Feeds, he joined the Land O Lakes team in 2001.  He has worked with swine producers in central and eastern South Dakota for Land O’ Lakes and CHS for the past 15 years and has been involved in the swine industry for the past 30 years. Mike is the Allied Industries Representative on the Executive Board.  He currently serves on the Association Services Committee, Personnel Committee and is Chairman of the Production and Profitability Committee.

Dave Uttecht
Huron

 Dave and his wife, Angie, have two children; Lauren and Andrew.  Dave serves on the SDPPC Ex-Officio Board as the organization’s immediate past president.  Dave has been on the Executive Board since 2000 and continues to show his commitment to the pork industry through leadership responsibilities as a member of the Executive Committee and Chairman of the Personnel Committee, serves on the Budget and Finance Committee, Public Policy Committee, Production Profitability Committee and Swine Health Advisory Committee and Jerauld/Sanborn County Pork Producers.  Dave is the Managing Partner of Heartland Pork, LLC, a farrow to finish operation near Alpena which sells market hogs, feeder pigs and breeding gilts. He was named the South Dakota Master Pork Producer for 1996 and was awarded Pork All American in 2000.

Jim and his wife, Melva have two grown children; Charlotte and Jonathan.

Jim has retired from farming, but has been actively involved in the SDPPC and animal health organizations. Jim serves on the SDPPC Ex-Officio Board as a representative of the Animal Industry Board.  Nationally Jim is the Past Pres of the USAHA. Within South Dakota, he serves on the SDPPC Swine Health Advisory Committee. Locally, Jim is involved in the State Bank of Alcester Board, South Lincoln County Rural Water Board, and the Union County Farm Mutual Board.

 

National Pork Board
Brad Greenway
Mitchell

Brad and his wife Peggy have two children; Brent and Mandi, and a son-in-law, Cris. Brad serves on the SDPPC Ex-Officio Board as the National Pork Board representative. Since being elected to the State Executive Board in 2000, Brad has been involved with several committees. Currently he serves on the Demand Enhancement and Public Policy Committees. He served as SDPPC President from 2005-2006.  In 2009 Brad was elected to serve a three year term on the National Pork Board.  On the national level he serves on the Domestic Marketing, Producer and State Relations, Audit, and Retail Advisory Committees, and is a member of the Consumer Advisory Panel.  Brad’s farm includes a wean-to-finish hog barn and market 6000 pigs per year, a cow/calf operation and diversified crops.  Brad and Peggy are involved in the Davison County Pork Producers, Up & Get It 4-H Club, and Brad serves on the township and fair board.  Brad was the recipient of the Pork All-American Award in 2002, a member of the 2003 Pork Leadership Academy, a 2008 Master Pork Producer, and has given over 60 Operation Main Street presentations.

 

 

 

Secretary of Agriculture
William Even

Bill Even was appointed South Dakota Secretary of Agriculture on March 15, 2007. He began his duties as Secretary on March 26, 2007. Bill holds an associate’s degree in agricultural production from Lake Area Technical Institute in Watertown, South Dakota, a bachelor’s degree in agricultural business with highest honors from South Dakota State University in Brookings, and a JD with high honors from Drake University Law School in Des Moines, Iowa, where he was an Opperman Scholar and received a certificate in food and agricultural Law. Prior to being appointed as Secretary of Agriculture, Mr. Even served as Director of the Governor’s Office of Economic Development and Deputy Secretary of Tourism and State Development. He also served as the state’s Energy Director and Executive Director for the South Dakota Energy Infrastructure Authority. Bill is also a member of the State Energy Advisory Board, which advises the U.S. Department of Energy on Policy.  In addition to his duties with the Department of Agriculture, Bill is a member of the South Dakota Bar Association and the American Agricultural Law Association. He served for ten years on the Board of Directors of the Humboldt Farmers Elevator Company and 15 years as a volunteer Emergency Medical Technician and Firefighter. Secretary Even and his family own and operate a diversified crop and livestock operation near Humboldt, SD. The farm was homesteaded in 1881 by his great-grandfather. Bill and his wife, Janell, live in Pierre with their three children.

Brad Greenway
Mitchell 

Brad serves on the SDPPC Ex-Officio Board as the organization's immediate past president. Since being elected to the Executive Board in 2000, Brad Greenway has been involved with several committees. Currently he serves on the following committees, Executive, Public Policy & Regulatory, and Demand Enhancement. Brad was a Pork Act Delegate for the 2006 World Pork Industry Forum. He is also very active in delivering Operation Main Street speeches and is a representative to the Demand Enhancement Committee for the National Pork Board. Brad and his father operate a farrow to finish operation and built a new 2,400-head hog barn in 2006.  Brad and his wife, Peggy, have two children, Brent and Mandi. The family is involved in the Davison County Pork Producers, Up & Get It 4-H Club and the Mount Vernon Wrestling Club. In 2002, Brad was the recipient of the Pork All-American Award.
